NextMsg vs ntfy vs Pushover vs Telegram bots

Checked October 17, 2026. Prices and limits of other services change; check their sites before you decide.

All four can put a notification from a script, server or AI agent on your phone. They differ in setup, privacy model and features. In short: NextMsg is the quickest one-way inbox with no account; ntfy is the pick if you want open source or self-hosting; Pushover has the most mature alerting features; a Telegram bot is free and flexible if you already live in Telegram and want two-way chat.

Choose NextMsg if

  • You want the shortest path: install, copy one key, curl. No account, bot or topic to manage.
  • You want a strictly one-way channel. Nothing can be sent back into your systems or agents, which matters when AI agents are involved.
  • You use Claude, Cursor or other MCP clients and want an official notify_human tool. See the agent guide.
  • You prefer a single payment over a subscription.

Choose ntfy if

  • You want open source and the option to self-host the whole thing.
  • You need attachments, action buttons or a web app.
  • You're comfortable choosing hard-to-guess topic names or setting up access control, since public topics are readable by anyone who knows the name.

Choose Pushover if

  • You need emergency alerts that keep repeating until someone acknowledges them, quiet hours, or delivery to a team.
  • You want desktop notifications as well as phone ones.
  • You want a long-established service with many existing integrations.

Choose a Telegram bot if

  • You already use Telegram every day and are happy for alerts to sit between your chats.
  • You want two-way interaction, such as replying to a bot to restart a service. That power also means more setup and a bigger attack surface.
  • You need a completely free option with large messages and files.

What NextMsg doesn't do (yet)

  • No self-hosting and no desktop app.
  • No attachments, images or action buttons: messages are short text, and links are shown as plain text on purpose.
  • No team or group delivery: one inbox per person, on all of that person's devices.
